Relocation (first steps)

In this second installment on relocation, I want to focus on the inevitable culture shock that awaits once you have decided to take the plunge and move to another country or even if you are just moving to a different town or city.

Unfortunately or fortunately, no two places are the same and so the first step is to be prepared to face challenges along the way. It may be a language barrier or it may simply be the way of life, the style of house or the neighbourhood you are moving to. If you are prepared to adapt, you are off to a great start. Relocation, especially if abroad, can be tough and the mindset is just as important as the actual move.

Whether you are moving from the city to the country or from Germany to the UK, it just won’t be what you were used to.

Set yourself realistic goals for adapting to your new surroundings and the culture you are about to become a part of, as there will be many things thrown at you soon after your move, if not before.

If you decide to hire help with your move or relocation as a whole, there are different people you can hire for different things and not all will be able to help with everything.

The steps an interior designer will take to make your move as smooth as possible can range from simply helping you with the design of your new home to the full implementation and furniture selection, or they may even be involved in the actual removal planning to make the transition as smooth as possible. It’s best to seek a consultation with your chosen interior designer to establish what they can offer.

It’s a good idea to know what you think you will need help with and to be honest and upfront about this, so that the designer can help establish a plan of action and advise on what they can help with directly or whether they may have any partners who can pick up the additionally required tasks. Often regulations need to be observed which are particular to the country or area you are moving to. This will need to be taken int account when planning next steps.

This initial chat can be in person or via a video conferencing platform to ensure the planning can start prior to your move. To ensure the smoothest conversation, we can offer this initial chat in 4 languages (English, German, French and Spanish) to ensure you can express all of your wishes as clearly as possible without having to focus too much on another language. Simply ask upon booking your consultation and we will be happy to set up a first meeting/call in language. If you would like to discuss a relocation project, get in touch through our Contact page or via enquiries@monseinteriordesign.com to book a consultation.
